ABSTRACT

The finite element method (FEM) is used as a tool to solve practical problems of composite materials and structures. For the most part, commercial packages, mainly Abaqus, are used in the examples. Computer programming is limited to implementing material models and post processing algorithms. In a few cases when commercial codes lack appropriate features, other available codes are used. A basic understanding of the finite element method is necessary for effective use of any finite element software. Therefore, this chapter contains a brief introduction intended for those readers who have not had a formal course or prior knowledge about the finite element method. Furthermore, an introduction to the Abaqus CAE graphical user interface (GUI) is presented to familiarize the reader with typical procedures used for finite element modeling using Abaqus.
