ABSTRACT

This book provides a simple explanation of the complex technologies and phrases being used in everyday life. This chapter commences with an overview of basic technology. Recent new smart technologies have been or are being developed because computer networks are at the point where we can compute much more today at faster speed than we ever could before (particularly due to the introduction of the 5G network). It explains in simple English, why STEM and analytics have recently become important. In order to explain accepted everyday technologies simply, sports technology analytics are used to demonstrate applications of analytics in industry. The chapter discusses the history and basic physics of computers followed by the viewing experience when watching displays on light-emitting diode (LED), versus organic LED (OLED), versus quantum dot LED (QLED) monitors. The advent of smartphones and their apps is discussed, and the realities of phone tower radiation are explored. The physics of what frequencies are and how they control computing is explained. Finally, there are suggestions for ‘Further Reading’ and an exercise (with answers at the back) to help the reader in a practical manner.
