ABSTRACT

Coronavirus Disease of 2019 [COVID-19], in general, is a new disease. The scientific community has been studying human coronaviruses for a long time, but the outcome of exposure to novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and the disease it causes are different compared to SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, etc. There are a number of different viruses that appear every year and cause flu symptoms in human. SARS-CoV-2 is relatively new to the human population, and thus the outcome of that infection may be unpredictable at the present time compared to the infections caused by the viruses that appear annually. This chapter discusses, in brief, the epidemiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and investigational treatments of COVID-19 that are currently under clinical trials. It is to be understood that similar findings might rapidly change in the upcoming days and open an altogether new vista in front of us with deeper understanding and groundbreaking research on the virulent strain.
