ABSTRACT

COVID-19 is a disease of the respiratory system caused by a coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2. SARS-CoV-2 gets transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person through respiratory droplets and droplet nuclei mainly via coughing, sneezing, or talking. The virus can also get transmitted through the objects contaminated with infectious agents. Touching of eyes, nose, or mouth with unclean hand increases an individual’s risk of getting infected. When in situations where complete information regarding the characteristics of the virus and proper treatment for the disease is not available, prevention measures are the only way of protection. The World Health Organization has recommended various safety measures that may help prevent and control the spread of the disease specifically for the general public. This chapter discusses, in brief, some of the basic preventive measures such as respiratory etiquette, hand hygiene, physical distancing, and surface cleaning.
