ABSTRACT

Electrophysiology is the branch of physiology that deals with the measurement and analysis of the electrical potentials originating from biological systems. The electrical potentials of cells, tissues and organs reflect the physiological and pathological status of the organs in which they are in-built. The electrical activity of the physiological system is related to its mechanical activity and such relationships are well established in human physiological systems, such as the cardiovascular system, neuromuscular system and the digestive system. This chapter gives a brief account of the action potentials, the types and classifications of biosignals, the constraints associated with the measurement of biosignals and the instrumentation systems associated with the measurement.
