ABSTRACT

Domesticated swine are referred to as hogs or pigs depending on their size. Hogs were domesticated from wild boars about 11,000 years ago in southwestern Asia and China. They are raised for their meat, hides, bones, and hair. Pork products are the most consumed meat product in the world. The U.S. has become the largest exporter of pork products in the world with 30% of its hog production being exported.

This chapter describes the natural behavior of swine. Handler and swine safety during handling is explained. Zoonoses from healthy-appearing hogs and pigs and means of preventing transmission are presented. Approaching and catching methods, handling for routine care and management, handling for common medical procedures, special equipment for handling, and methods of transporting swine are included.
