ABSTRACT

The chicken was the first domesticated poultry about 8,000 years ago in India and Southeast Asia. Today’s poultry are raised for meat, eggs, feathers, and leather. Some are used for insect control and as property sentinels. Domesticated poultry include chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, guineafowl, and ratites (ostriches, emus, and rheas).

This chapter describes the natural behavior of poultry depending on species. Handler and bird safety during handling is explained. Zoonoses from healthy-appearing poultry and means of preventing transmission are presented. Approaching and catching methods, handling procedures for routine care and management, and common handling methods for medical procedures for poultry are included.
