ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an exploration of images of the Mandelbrot set. A review of the complex numbers and their operations of addition and multiplication is given, followed by an explanation of how to graph complex numbers on a plane. The simple dynamical system at the basis of the definition of the Mandelbrot is used to determine whether selected points are in the Mandelbrot set or not. The graph of the Mandelbrot set is explained. The last section of the chapter gives a list of properties of the Mandelbrot set. The chapter concludes with a list of exercises and readings.
