ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an exploration of tiling patterns. This chapter introduces the three regular plane tilings (by equilateral triangles, squares, or regular hexagons). The tiling by squares has two different period 4 rotations, period 2 rotations, reflections, glide reflections, and translations. Both the tiling by equilateral triangles and the tiling by regular hexagons have period 6 rotations, period 3 rotations, reflections, glide reflections, and translations. The symmetries of the regular tilings determine their signatures. The term unit cell of a tiling pattern is defined in terms of the translations of a tiling pattern. A technique is given for creating new tilings from the regular tilings by adjoining cells. The chapter concludes with a list of exercises, readings, and artists who designed tilings.
