ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an exploration of tilings from ancient Egypt. The seventeen different symmetry types of tilings are described along with their symmetries and signatures. There are four tilings without rotations, six tilings with rotations but no reflections, and seven tilings with both rotations and reflections. In addition, all of these tilings have translation symmetries and some have glide reflections. Tips for determining the symmetry type of a tiling are given. Two tables summarize the seventeen types of tilings, one giving pictorial examples of each type of tiling and one giving the properties of their symmetry transformations. The chapter concludes with a list of exercises, readings, and resources, and examples of art that exhibit tiling patterns.
