ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with explorations of the picture Cycle of an impossible world created by the Dutch artist MC Escher and a tiling pattern like the one used by Escher in the picture Cycle. Escher’s interest in tilings was inspired by visits to the Alhambra in Spain and a mathematical description of the seventeen types of tilings given to him by his brother. The second section gives detailed instructions for making tiles similar to those that Escher created for his pictures. The next two sections analyze Cycle and another tiling by Escher and shows how the tiles in the pictures could have been created. The chapter concludes with a list of exercises, readings, and resources.
