ABSTRACT

Silver carp is a Chinese carp introduced in 1959 by importing from Hong Kong and Japan. An upturned mouth and laterally compressed body with small silvery scales are its identifying features. Grass carp is also a Chinese carp that was imported from Japan and introduced in India in 1959. It manures the fish ponds as fifty percent of the daily food consumed, which constitutes organic manure. Snakehead or murrels have long been regarded as a valuable food fish by the Asian people. There are several species of snakehead belonging to the genus Channa, but only one species Channa striatus is cultivated. The seed availability is the major constraint for murrel farming. At present the farms obtain their fry for stocking from specialist fry collectors. These collectors, using their knowledge of the natural spawning grounds, collect wild fry using simple netting procedures.
