ABSTRACT

Tilapia farming is getting more popular throughout the world. Tilapia is being cultured both in freshwater and brackish water regions in Asian continent. The main concern of farmers is to procure quality seed stock that can grow to marketable size within the shortest possible time. Farmers can procure seed stock from reliable reputable hatcheries, or operate a hatchery themselves to be assured of good quality seed. As broodstock fish are the key element of the hatchery, their quality and management affect the quality and quantity or seed production, which are ultimately the major indicators of success/failure of the hatchery. Grading of fry is very important after the initial development stages to minimize mortality caused by cannibalism and social dominance, as tilapia fry are aggressive in nature. Tilapia culture is mostly dependent on rainfall, which is the main source of water to fill the ponds.
