ABSTRACT

Selection of suitable site and setting up of infrastructure facilities is a prerequisite for the establishment of a profitable fish hatchery. A viable fish culture practice primarily depends on the selection of a suitable site which in turn depends upon water retention, quality of the soil and availability of adequate water supply for hatchery operation. The pH of the water should be of the range 7–9 and the organic carbon content should be 1.5–2.5%. Site with uniform natural slope towards one side are suitable for pond construction. The bundhs are designed such that the top portion is flat with slopes on both the sides so that the bundh does not collapse due to higher water pressure. The inlet canals take water to the ponds from the water source. Usually the primary inlet canal would be constructed at the centre of the farm and water will be supplied to the ponds on both of its sides using secondary inlet canals.
