ABSTRACT

Biowaste materials are considered to be valued raw materials that can be converted into natural fertilizer and or green fuel. There are several treatment processes for biowaste materials; these include composting, landfilling, anaerobic digestion and biological mechanical treatment (BMT). The mechanism of degradation of biowaste is a very complex process that passes through several intermediary biochemical reactions. As an example, a landfill gas produced by the decomposition process of organic materials typically contains methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases, with a percentage of 45–60 and 35–45, respectively. In this chapter, we will discuss the main application processes of biowaste treatment and disposal.
