ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the flexural buckling of the beam and column members. The buckling load and buckling mode of a beam-column member are obtained by solving the eigenvalue problem of its governing differential equation. The influence of the boundary condition on the buckling load is investigated. The solutions to the governing equation are obtained for different external loads. The buckling of a beam-column with an initial deflection and that of inelastic material property are studied. While the theoretical and mechanical aspects of bifurcation and buckling of structures have been studied so far, this chapter deals with various kinds of engineering aspects, such as cross-section design of members, initial deflection, and inelastic buckling.
