ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 has dealt with the buckling of a beam-column member and Chapter 8 with the buckling of a truss structure. This chapter studies the buckling of a two-dimensional frame structure comprising beam-column members subjected to axial forces and bending moments. A cubic polynomial representation of the deflection is used to obtain a member stiffness equation of a beam-column member and to obtain the stiffness equation of a whole structure by assembling member stiffness equations. The linear buckling analysis introduced in Chapter 8 is employed, and a formulation consistent with the finite element method is introduced. Results and terminology of the buckling of a beam-column member in Chapter 7 are employed from time to time.
