ABSTRACT

Public health entomology is an applied science which concentrates on the arthropod-related issues a public health agency may deal with, as opposed to basic academic science (“science for the sake of science”). However, there is still ample justification for public health entomologists (PHEs) to conduct research, albeit more operational in scope. Such research projects include area surveys for mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other vectors, as well as analysis of arthropod samples for disease agents. In addition, PHEs may conduct insecticide efficacy trials, insecticide resistance testing, and the like. This chapter examines how and when a PHE might conduct research, with ideas on possible funding sources and potential collaborators.
