ABSTRACT

Wharfie Animation analyses Reade's contribution to a small number of animation projects produced by the Waterside Workers' Federation Film Unit (WWFFU). The discussion provides a brief insight into 1950s' attitudes to Australian indigenous culture and its expression through animation. It contains a survey of dominant trends in 1950s' Australian animation, and an overview of Reade's involvement with the WWFFU and its animation projects. With the demise of the WWFFU in 1961, and inspired by the ideal of international solidarity, Reade made the decision to go to Cuba. His aim was to participate collaboratively in that country's revolutionary change from capitalism to communism.
