ABSTRACT

Harry Reade's Legacy reflects on the life of a talented and versatile artist who made a contribution to the social and cultural development of both Australia and Cuba. It also reflects on the tensions generated in Reade's life by and between his ideological convictions and his creative expression. The chapter argues that Reade's contribution to animation deserves greater recognition if only for the fact that his life and work straddled two worlds with opposing ideologies. In a medium often ruled by commercialism, Reade provides an alternative role model—that of the social realist who used animation to serve an instructive social function.
