ABSTRACT

Many problems and challenges in healthcare are related to a specific aspect of the patient journey and experience, such as access, medical diagnosis, medical therapy, patient admission, patient orientation, meals or accommodation. Further, many of these problems are multifaceted, which, simply put, means that you cannot solve them without considering all aspects of the problem. For some problems, senior healthcare professionals bring them to senior management to “fight their corner” and sort out what they see as “the problem (or challenge)” from their professional perspective. In this forum, they seek a solution which may require new work structures, a changed culture and innovation spaces to engage in ideation. Some may recognise the need to seek out, trial and use concepts such as innovation and design tools. In Chapter 6, we explore the creation of a culture to support and activate the solutions they may discover. However, in this chapter, we take a preparatory step as we explore the concept of problems and the distinction with puzzles.
