ABSTRACT

Brick is one of the oldest construction materials and, still, is highly preferred currently in masonry works. In this chapter, the unit summary describes the manufacturing process of bricks with kiln details. Chemical composition of raw materials and their significance on the characteristics of bricks is also emphasised. A short description of different brick masonry patterns, including details of types of closer and types of bats are stated. Test methods are covered in two categories as field tests and laboratory test methods. Compressive strength, water absorption, efflorescence and warpage test methods are described in detail. Exercise questions from competitive examinations are given for practice in the latter part of the chapter.
