ABSTRACT

Lime was used as a primary binder material before the invention of cement. Although lime is considered as a binder, it has a number of applications in construction materials. For example, lime is extensively used for the production of paints, putty, etc. For that reason, it is imperative to understand the characteristics and quality control methods. The types of lime, such as classes A, B, C, D, E and F, are listed as per Indian standard IS 712 in the unit summary. Moreover, impurities in lime, such as magnesium carbonate, sulphates, and their significance are specified. The production process of lime and safety measures in storage and usage of lime are also presented. Detailed testing procedures for lime reactivity and soundness test are presented.
