ABSTRACT

Timber is an essential construction material used in construction. Although timber houses are probable, frequently it is used for a specific element such as doors, window etc. In this chapter, essential parts in the macrostructure-based cross-section of wood are specified in the unit summary to understand its basic structure. Several possible defects in timber due to conversion, fungi, natural forces, seasoning are summarised to assess the timber based on defects and identify remedies. The four most important steps of processing of timber, i.e., felling of trees, seasoning of timber, conversion and timber preservation, are discussed. The compressive and tensile strength of timber with respect to grains orientation are also presented. Exercise problems related to timber from competitive examinations are provided in the last part.
