ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the importance of recognizing and addressing the emotions of grief, guilt, and shame, which are often experienced by clients in relation to their pets.

Grief from pet loss can be profound, and it is not a problem that can be solved. However, we can guide clients toward comforting rituals such as obituary writing to create a narrative about their pet. Sympathy card writing is also discussed. Anticipatory grief is commonly experienced by clients (as well as practitioners) and is important to recognize and address.

The guilt and shame some clients experience surrounding death and euthanasia may be linked to dysfunctional or false narratives regarding their ability to care for their pet. Reassurance from veterinary practitioners and staff can be a vital form of support for grieving clients, and this is discussed in detail.

This chapter includes the author’s previously published Guide to Writing an Obituary for Your Pet, as well as a Case Story by Alice Oven.
