ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how data analytics can be used in law enforcement settings with a set of examples. These are: predicting violent crime rates (but actually learning which properties affect them); clustering incident data from Records Management Systems, seeing how crimes are distributed geographically, seeing how the risk of gun violence is related to social network position far more than to demographic or social disadvantage properties; looking at the enhanced social networks derived from the presence of perpetrators, victims , and witnesses at police-involved incidents, looking at the structure of a drug-smuggling network and its response to interdictions by police; analysing online posts for properties such as abuse, intent, deception, fraud, and individual roles; and understanding drug pathways from the chemical signatures of interdicted drugs.
