ABSTRACT

This chapter will provide an overview of the development of digital pattern cutting systems, outlining how major developments in both processing speed and graphic processing power have ultimately enabled a merging of 2D and 3D digital pattern systems. The chapter will move on review recent and emerging technologies in this area, focusing on one of the world’s leading providers of digital pattern cutting systems Lectra and how they are meeting current industry challenges that include the drive towards sustainable design practices and sustainable supply chains, faster fashion, creating clothing that fits, and offering consumers options for personalised apparel by developing the potential for fully automating pattern cutting practices and processes during the product development and production development stages of apparel generation.
