ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the basic biometric characteristics that are used for biometric identification of a person. Static and dynamic biometric characteristics are considered. Static biometric characteristics include those characteristics that are invariable over time, and dynamic biometric characteristics are evaluated at specific time intervals. The principles and advantages of multimodal biometric identification of a person are described. Such identification is more reliable and protected from unauthorized interference. The main characteristics by which the biometric identification system is assessed are presented. The biometric characteristics that are device-dependent and device-independent are highlighted. Also, biometric characteristics are divided into characteristics that can be analyzed at a distance and in close proximity to the input of the biometric sensor.
