ABSTRACT

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans. These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. Workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses. Training should be provided to each worker on the dangers of bloodborne pathogens. Careful attention to personal hygiene habits should be stressed. Workers should be informed that handwashing is one of their best defenses against spreading infection, including HIV. It is an excellent idea to equip all environmental facilities with first aid kits and other emergency medical kits that are designed to protect against bloodborne pathogens.
