ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how the Hypertension Institute Plan (HIP) works in real terms in the daily lives of our patients. The HIP provides patients with a truly comprehensive way to reframe and rethink their relationship to food, health, and wellness. Ritual matters and creating wellness-oriented rituals in HIP can transform negative patterns into positive ones. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a key component of this, allowing patients to reframe their thinking around food. One habit that has to become a healthy ritual is food shopping and stocking the cupboards and fridge. A more mindful process results in better eating. HIP is highly individualized but there are key principles to it that anyone can leverage in their own approach to nutrition. While HIP varies from patient to patient, beginning with 2 weeks of detox and elimination before reintroducing some foods to test for food sensitivity is a common approach used.
