ABSTRACT

Induction machines are low-cost, simple, and rugged. As such, they are the most commonly used type of AC machines. Most induction machines are used as motors, although in certain applications, e.g., wind energy, they are used as generators too. This chapters discusses the basic principles of induction machines and derives their equivalent circuit model. Standard tests are also introduced for determining the parameters of this equivalent circuit. Considering the large current that induction motors can draw at start-up, their performance and different start-up methods are also introduced.
