ABSTRACT
About 90% of all motors manufactured are the single phase. They are used extensively in homes, businesses, farms, and small industries. Most of them are built as fractional horsepower. There are three basic types of single-phase ac motors: single-phase induction motors, universal motors, and single-phase synchronous motor. This chapter discusses the construction, equivalent circuit, and performance of these motors and additionally talks about permanent magnet DC motors.
