ABSTRACT

Chapter 15 is a comprehensive discussion of the essential project management tools to execute a project successfully. It is organized into five “hard-systems” management functions:

Effectively plan the work

Implement a safety program

Utilize processes to control the work

Achieve deliverables within expectations

Bring the project to an efficient close

Each of these contains “best practices” to achieve them.

Planning emphasizes all the significant tasks, from selecting a robust concept through figuring out how much it will cost and how long it will take to build. It also covers Construction Implementation Planning and Construction Readiness Assessments. Leading a safety program is covered along with a best practice for doing that. The major part of the chapter is dedicated to explaining processes to control the work. Pragmatic approaches are described for implementing each of the eight primary core competencies of Professional Project Management. Again, the emphasis is on best practices. This leads to a practical discussion of project deliverables, their achievability, and consistent performance outcomes. The chapter ends with how to close out a project.
