ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 introduces Part 2—Leadership—of the book, by discussing what leadership is. It then forcefully presents the first lesson in leadership—think and act like a leader. This is followed by a commentary on the steps in leadership development. Implicit in these steps is the conviction that leadership can be learned and improved. They also reinforce that leadership is a career-long pursuit. The bulk of this first leadership chapter concentrates on knowing one’s self—the first step in leadership development. The discussion introduces the Myers-Briggs personality-type indicator, as a way to learn about one’s personality. This is followed by a section on core values, which points out six core values of an effective leader. No introduction to leadership would be complete without a discussion of power and influence. The use of power and influence is one of the central personal issues in both leadership and ethics. That is followed by a number of exercises.
