ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 begins with an in-depth discussion of how a young, female, construction manager carried out her work. She is a born leader. This discussion of effective leadership techniques, which she exhibited early in her career, is extremely relevant information for undergraduate- and graduate-level students in the built-environment curricula. Following that is a presentation of eight General Leadership Techniques, which includes an excellent example of their application on a real construction project. These leadership techniques are really the “how” of being an effective leader. They are proven techniques that are practiced by the leaders of high-performance teams. However, one additional set of leadership techniques is needed to deliver leadership to the place where the work is actually done. Leadership Techniques for Construction Operations stresses education for superintendents and forepersons who are on the frontline of getting the work performed. Those leadership techniques are presented in a way that is relevant to leading and motivating the workforce. The application of these techniques has the potential to significantly improve construction productivity. In addition, it is something that the new practitioner—who will be working close to the workface—can apply on the job, immediately.
