ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, the authors develop a comprehensive view of “what” a project manager must do in order to be an effective and ethical leader. The chapter also draws a distinction between leadership and management by listing and describing the functions of each. These are essentially the “duties” that a project manager must perform in order to manage and lead a project. The reader will note that the six fundamental propositions of leadership, ethics, and alignment are included in these functions to ensure successful execution. In order, the authors cover:

Management functions

Leadership functions

Leadership functions integrated into management functions

This last bullet point illustrates the project manager’s entire job. For clarity, each set of functions is divided into task-oriented and people-oriented functions. As the reader will see, project managers don’t just manage or lead. They must do both to accomplish the whole project manager’s job. The figure illustrating the last bullet point is actually a checklist of what a project manager must do to develop a high-performance team.
