ABSTRACT

Part 2 of the textbook begins with this chapter on personal ethics. To draw the readers into the subject of ethics and its importance to them personally, the authors present a situation of a young engineer with an ethical problem concerning an expense report—for which there is really no “good” solution. The authors then offer the possible sources of a person’s ethics, values, and virtues. To get the readers thinking about their personal ethics, the situation of the “elderly woman and the ring” is introduced. The readers are asked to write down what they would do in this situation before reading on. This is followed by material based on the work of Dr. Joanne Ciulla into the “moral obligations” people have and the “personal challenges” they face, especially as young engineers or architects. With these new thoughts in mind, the readers are asked to reconsider what they would do concerning the elderly woman and the ring, now that they are aware of their moral obligations and personal challenges. The chapter closes with a transition that describes the remaining contents in Part 2—Ethics.
