ABSTRACT

As England takes over from Holland maritime and financial leadership in Europe, eyes turn to the success of the Spaniards in exploiting central and southern America, and in 1607 the first British permanent settlement is established in North America. This brief chapter includes a summary of construction activity in England at the time of that settlement, which led to the colony of Virginia, followed by Massachusetts shortly thereafter. The period witnessed the emergence of the early architects and engineers and new approaches to construction following the Great Fire of London in 1666. This also led to new advances in zoning and building codes.
