ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of mining equipment reliability. It covers reasons for improving mining equipment reliability and factors impacting mining system reliability, useful reliability-related measures for mining equipment, open-pit system reliability analysis, dump-truck tire reliability and the factors affecting their life, programmable electronic mining system failures, designing reliable conveyor belt systems and methods of measuring winder rope degradation, typical mining equipment maintenance errors and factors contributing to maintenance errors, useful engineering design-related improvement guidelines for reducing mining equipment maintenance errors, and problems. The open-pit system reliability analysis covers open-pit parallel system and open-pit series system. The methods of measuring winder rope degradation, presented in the chapter are magnetic non-destructive testing method and visual inspection method.

There are ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area and the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given its reference section.
