ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of power system reliability. It covers power system reliability–related terms and definitions, power system service performance indices, loss of load probability (LOLP), availability analysis of a single power generator unit, availability analysis of transmission and associated systems, and problems. The power system service performance indices are average service availability index, system average interruption duration index, customer average interruption during index, customer average interruption frequency index, system average interruption frequency index, and measuring service quality (i.e., measuring the continuity of electricity supply to the customer) index. Three mathematical models presented in the chapter are concerned with availability analysis of a single power generator unit availability analysis of transmission and associated systems.

At appropriate places, the chapter contains examples along with their solutions, and there are ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic.
