ABSTRACT

Each Company has its own culture, initially shaped by its founders, subsequently evolving in response to circumstances. Maintaining a healthy culture requires attention from senior managers and Directors. This includes consciously assessing core values in response to or in anticipation of changing circumstances, including societal expectations. Environmental excellence has become a core value for many Companies but this is not always reflected in environmental performance. When successfully established, environmental excellence can be a valuable differentiator leading to reputational enhancement and improved financial performance. Policies relating to Company culture include mission statements, codes of conduct, grievance resolution measures, recruitment standards, job descriptions, and performance evaluations, all supported by appropriate documentation and training. Cultural sensitivity is an important factor, particularly for Companies operating in different cultural settings.
