ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents the general outline of the thesis. It introduces the study area and the problems it faces. The book also presents the main objective of the research, research questions and the methodology undertaken. It provides an overview of the previous studies of groundwater management and saltwater intrusion (SWI) modeling in the Nile Delta Aquifer (NDA) in Egypt and worldwide. The book describes the development of the groundwater simulation model for salinity distribution in the NDA and the obtained results for the current conditions. It explores the simulation of salinity distribution for the proposed scenarios for the years 2100 and 2500 in the NDA as a whole, and in the ND governorates. The book provides comparative analysis between the impact of groundwater extraction and/or sea level rise (SLR) on salinization.
