ABSTRACT

Jungian archetypes and tarot provide a solid basis for aspiring toward mythic resonance that some of the most powerful videogame characters evoke. In more sophisticated implementations, there can be many branches of dialogue based on the context and tone with which a player accepts or rejects a quest. In the most nuanced and complex quest systems, such as those in The Witcher 3, dialogue can be highly granular and responsive to a vast database of variables tracking minute changes in world state, such as weather in an area or clothing worn by a player, as well as social history between characters. There is an art to balancing both, which in the case of a quest with a medieval setting may consist of alternating or mixing archaic language with more modern, straightforward language “Then find my axe and bring it to me”.
