ABSTRACT

Feathers are the valuable by-products extensively used for the manufacture of various kinds of commercial products of artistic values. The medicinal value of emu oil is becoming the main commercial product. The emu is a heavy and tall non-flight bird and second in size among the living ratites of the world. The feathers provide protection from ambient heat due to which emus remain active even during the mid day. Pure emu oil is used as a constituent of several formulations used for the following purpose. The feathers of emu are inferior in quality in comparison to the feathers of ostrich. The leather made of emu skin has high commercial value due to the following features. Broken egg shells are offered to emus in their fenced paddocks. The running speed is highest among the long ratites like emu, rhea. The bird is largest among the living large ratites emus and rheas. The bird is similar to emu and ostrich in appearance.
