ABSTRACT

Common parrots found caged in the homes of Bhartiya families are green feathered with or without red colour necklace. Some important characteristics of true parrots are presented because these are common pet birds kept in designed cages containing a pirch inside for the perching of the bird in limited space of the cage. Common parrots eat cereal grains, leguminous seeds, oilseeds and seeds of many fruits and vegetable. The diets of pet parrots of vegetarian and non vegetarian households are accordingly divided. In vegetarian families parrots are fed cooked rice with pulses, milk and milk products, jaggary, green chilli, carrot, guava and other foods eaten in the family of owners. In non vegetarian families they are also fed meat, fish eggs etc. The intelligence and learning ability of pet parrots in company of humans have been observed as follows. Common Bhartiya pet parrots maintained properly in cages often exceeded half century.
