ABSTRACT

The organ is differentiated in to specialized compartments for performing specific functions like prehension, collection or transient storage, moistening, enzyme treatment, grinding, digesting absorption of digested nutrients and excretion. The muscles of gizzard are also much stronger than the gizzard of chicken due to which pressure developed in gizzard during the process of digestion is about 275, 180 and 125 mm Hg in goose, duck and chicken respectively. Some sporadic studies mostly on Turkey have provided limited informations, the important being the anti-peristaltic movement from cloaca and caeca for the absorption of moisture before exertion of urine. The functions are the transfer of urine from the cloaca into the colon and caeca for the absorption of water and second function is the filling of caeca. The greater part of fluid of digesta is absorbed through the pre-colon parts of the intestine followed by absorption through the wall of colon.
