ABSTRACT

In India, Institute the contribution is by CMFRI, RGCA (MPEDA), CIBA & State Agricultural Universities. With view to propagate mariculture in India, detailed feasibility study was undertaken 1990's through an overseas agency to micro survey Indian coast for studying its potential for offshore farming. Survey revealed that India has great potential for offshore farming, along continental coast of South India & Island coasts. Production potential of 8 million tonnes of high quality marine fish is harvestable through cage culture practices. Coastal waters of northeast coast receiving riverine discharges of perennial rivers, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mahanadhi, Godavari & Krishna several small rivers with land run off very productive & favourable for carrying out coastal aquaculture. Urgent need for diversification of aquaculture in area such as for culture of finfishes, crustceans and molluscans will provide livelihood to unemployed in coastal parts where population density is high & poverty widely prevalent.
