ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on describing overlay network classification, Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) control plane protocol Ethernet Virtual Private Network, and forwarding process of various data packets. The overlay network is completely decoupled from the underlay network. VXLAN is used by the majority of enterprises as the technical standard for constructing overlay networks. VXLAN overlay networks can be classified into network overlay, host overlay, and hybrid overlay based on the device models functioning as VXLAN tunnel endpoints. For centralized and distributed network overlay, distributed network overlay is advantageous. The chapter describes the traffic forwarding process on the VXLAN forwarding plane. The distributed VXLAN overlay networking example is used to describe mapping between logical and physical models. The controller translates the Virtual Private Cloud logical network model designed by an administrator into configuration commands, during automatic service configuration. A logical model is formed after modeling and abstraction of a user network on the controller.
