ABSTRACT

Several phenomena have been recently observed that can be attributed to the behavior of matter in the nanodomain. This chapter examines some of such very interesting phenomena and their immediate impact on the development of our technology. Gold nanoparticle solutions were shown to yield different colors depending upon the gold particle size and shape. It is interesting to realize that for gold particles size of 2 nm the particle size is too small to affect the light interaction with the solution resulting in a solution with optical properties similar to those of water. Optical properties nanospheres with core shell structures also shows interesting optical nanophenomenon. An interesting nanophenomenon is the observed effect of alumina nanoparticles on the thermal conductivity of fluids once suspended in them. Experimental data obtained for alumina nanoparticles of different shapes in a fluid consisting of equal volumes of ethylene glycol and water showed an enhanced thermal conductivity.
