ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the fundamental equations of the three-dimensional stress–strain relations for fiber-reinforced composites have been developed. These equations form the base for developing the two-dimensional stress–strain relations in further chapters. The stress–strain relations developed in this chapter have been obtained by smearing the properties of the fiber and the matrix in an equivalent homogeneous orthotropic material. The compliance and stiffness matrices have been developed for various types of composites. In addition, the effects of free thermal strain and free moisture strain have also been explained in detail.
